Comologno, Onsernone -  A great remote river situated at the end of a mountain valley that neighbours the city of Locarno. The river contains mostly brown trout, brook trout and grayling. It is safe to say these are truly wild fish, and it is a near certainty that the fish you catch will never have been caught before. The gorges of the river are also spectacular and contain these fish in abundance.

Approaching them requires immense stealth, practice and ingenuity. The fish spook easily. Wearing camouflage clothing is highly recommended. Due to the many slow moving pools available, dry-fly fishing is optimal. If fishing with dry flies, the striking motion must be delayed by about 3 seconds from when the fish takes the fly. Often, if you strike too early you will lose the fish.

Due to the fact that these fish are easily spooked, it is recommended to fish this river upstream. This will minimize the chances of fish spotting you. Also, use long leaders, with anything above 5x tippet recommended.

The river is very long although only certain parts are accessible due to the geography of the location. There are many vertiginous cliffs and dangerous areas here, so care and precaution must always be exercised. For any region-specific tips visit the fishing shop in Locarno; they will be happy to provide you with the correct flies, a permit (15/25CHF per day) and a map of the area.
